Who we are

Subtle Layers was founded by Jim Petty in 2024. A professional sound designer and A/V engineer, Jim has worked in the theatre, film, and events industry in New York City. He has long recognized the profound impact sound can have on the mind, body, and soul. In 2021, after attending his first sound bath, Jim experienced a life-changing moment that solidified his desire to immerse himself in this transformative work.

For decades, Jim struggled with chronic back pain, trying nearly every treatment available in search of relief. After years of physical therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy, countless cortisone and epidural injections, chiropractic care, and a myriad of medications, he finally found solace in a sound bath.

For years, Jim was trapped in a painful cycle of chronic pain and depression, a condition where pain exacerbates depression and vice versa, compounded by the anxiety of never feeling "normal." However, during his first experience with sound healing, he discovered a fleeting moment of peace that became pivotal in his healing journey.

As Jim began attending sound baths regularly, he delved deeper into meditative states, allowing his mind and body to relax and initiate the healing process. Shortly thereafter, he incorporated pranayama (breathwork) into his practice, enhancing his meditation and exploring the intricate science behind sound and breath.

Jim pursued formal training in sound healing and breathwork, completing a sound healing certification course and attending a workshop with the Sound Healing Academy. He also studied the SOMA Breath method with Niraj Naik and earned a breathwork instructor certification with Michael Bijker.

A practitioner and firm believer in Qi Gong, Jim aspires to become an instructor. He is also working towards a 200-hour yoga instructor certification. He believes that all of these modalities serve as pathways to a meditative state where true healing can begin for the mind, body, and soul.
